The empty cubicles at the now-defunct Gourmet sure did mark the end of an era. Yet there's at least one silver lining to the magazine's sad ending. Gourmet's exhaustive cookbook collection has found a safe haven at New York University's Fales Library.

Interior stylist, author, and owner of London shop Caravan, Emily Chalmers has made a career out of finding beauty in objects that require more ingenuity than income. Cheap Chic ($20), which was originally published in 2003 in hardcover, will be released at the end of this month in paperback, and is a perfect example of her talent at transforming overlooked secondhand objects into things of beauty.
I was lucky enough to take a peek at the book thanks to a review copy from the publishers.

Uh-oh: another cost-a-pretty-penny chair I've fallen in love with. In particular, I'm charmed by how the feminine pattern on this fabric blends perfectly with the more masculine lines of the wooden frame of this Julian Chichester Library Chair (inquire for price). And how cool does it look with that wide-planked flooring and worn interior?

When you're a serious bibliophile, a library room just won't cut it. If you have the means, you create a separate building to house your beloved tomes.
That's just what a Nantucket homeowner did.

At the Library Lions Benefit for the New York Public Library, Dustin Hoffman told New York magazine why he loves the library.
"It's the first place I ever got laid."
Seems like as good of a reason as any!

Whether it's thanks to the books, the sense of history, or the quiet environs, I've always found libraries one of the most comforting interior spaces I've ever inhabited. Give me any library, I'm not picky — it could be a university library, my neighborhood public library, or the library room at an older friend's grand home — I'm happy to just sit in a big, comfy chair among books.
To create your own timeless library look, start with the most important element — books!

The LA Times recently did an interesting feature story on the San Fernando Library, which has special video game days where they invite local children to get their game on. Apparently the events have been such a success that the American Library Association designated last Friday the first "National Gaming @ Your Library Day." Here's more:
Libraries are turning to video games to connect with teenagers who have outgrown story time.

Cat loving TrèsSugar spotted a recent article naming the most famous bookstore cats from across the country including the (late) Fup of Powell's Books in Portland, OR seen here. Seems felines and fiction go together like Dewey and decimal since enough libraries have resident kitties that there's actually a Library Cat Society. Who knew?

This past weekend, I finally visited my local library and picked up a few books and DVDs (and paid my late fines). While my little neighborhood library isn't nearly as glamorous as the George Peabody Library in Baltimore, MD, it still is a source of comfort, simply because I'm surrounded by books (plus my library has a great open-beamed ceiling). Take a look at the gallery below and see if any of these library interiors inspire you, and if any of the frescoes, tables, tiled floors, or shelves could be adapted to your home.

The library is a fantastic resource for cheap entertainment, providing access to a plethora of books, magazines, and movies. Borrowing doesn't cost you a dime, as long as you remember to return your items on time. Do you have a card to your local library?
